Jean-Pierre Nel started his graphic design career in 2013 and has since acquired more than six design diplomas, experience as a freelance designer and experience as an in-house designer for an industry-leading IT company.
Jean-Pierre immigrated from South Africa to New Zealand with his partner Chanel and their lovely dog Coco in 2019. With his passion for design and desire to help others, Jean-Pierre started his own graphic design business.
Pathos Pixels was officially launched in 2020, focusing on becoming a creative studio that is well known for its high-quality work, competitive pricing, excellent customer service and support for the local community.
Jean-Pierre decided to call Pathos Pixels a creative studio instead of a graphic design studio since his long-term goal is to make Pathos Pixels a creative powerhouse by adding other creative services such as photography, videography and photo digitisation.
BEHIND THE NAME
Aristotle, the famous Greek philosopher, created three modes of persuasion.
Also known as the Three Artistic Proofs, they are used to persuade others.
Logos, or the appeal to logic, means to convince an audience using logic or reason.
Ethos, or ethical appeal, means to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character.
Pathos, or emotional appeal, means to persuade an audience by appealing to their emotions.
At Pathos Pixels, we believe that effective graphic design must have the ability to connect with people on an emotional level. That's why we chose the word "Pathos" as part of our business name. Pathos refers to the mode of emotional persuasion, and we strive to use this mode in our designs to persuade our clients' target audiences.
In addition to the emotional aspect, we also wanted to highlight the technical aspect of our work. That's why we included the word "Pixels" in our name. Pixels are the building blocks of digital images, and we focus on every single pixel in our designs to ensure the highest level of detail and quality.
By combining the emotional persuasion of "Pathos" with the technical precision of "Pixels", we believe our business name perfectly reflects our approach to graphic design.

Jean-Pierre is the driving force behind Pathos Pixels as the passionate graphic designer who does the actual work, meets with clients and partners, and runs all the required daily activities.
Chanel van Straaten
Chanel is a successful project manager in her day job and a loving partner to Jean-Pierre. She provides support, motivation and acts as a soundboard, making her role invaluable to Pathos success.
Coco has been part of Jean-Pierre and Chanel’s family since 2014. Being super spoiled, specialising in seeking attention and an expert in manipulation, he is ultimately the Boss that clients also come to love.
